Hot Water Beach, on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula is renowned in New Zealand for its natural hot springs, accessible for thermal bathing in the sand at low tide. It is also a very beautiful beach.

This house occupies a sublime and generous site on the ridge behind Hot Water Beach, with expansive views north and east, over the beach, the surrounding coastline, and the Pacific Ocean.

The house is expressed as three distinct pavilions which appear as rocky crags from below. 

The lines of connection between these volumes and their adjacent exterior courts mark a cross on the site as a primal gesture of encampment.
